The Calm Before the Storm

This picture may not look like much but beneath that cozy layer of snow is a cozier layer of straw. And underneath that cozier layer of straw are thousands of garlic bulbs waiting to burst from their dormancy. As far as pictures of your future food goes, this time of year this is as good as it gets.

A Couple of Announcements

Don’t forget to sign-up for your 2020 vegetable shares! And while you are at it, don’t forget to buy your friends some 2020 vegetables shares! What about the cousins? Shouldn’t you be buying them 2020 vegetables shares? Seems like you have a lot of work ahead of you.

I just added FruitShare to our online farmstand! FruitShare is a great way to get delicious, certified organic fruit all summer long. FruitShare includes but is not limited to blueberries, grapes, peaches, plums, pluots, apples, cherries, and pears — all in season and gluten free! It is a great compliment to the vegetables! Place your order from our online farmstand! And while you are there don’t forget about your friends and cousins. I’m sure they like fruit as well! (If you are already a member of the farm you can just send in a check with “FruitShare” on the memo line; no need to go through the online farm stand if you don’t want to).

I’m not sure everyone is aware but we also grow transplants for our members. It isn’t our main business but we’ve found in the past that some of our customers like to grow a small herb garden or have a tomato plant or two on their deck. We typically have the plants ready by mid May, right around the time the tender, warm season plants can be planted out. Plants can be ordered here. And don’t forget to get some for your friends, neighbors and cousins.

For those who put down a deposit the remainder is due in March. If you don’t know how much you owe shoot me an email and I will figure it out. If you want to pay early do not suppress the urge.

And finally, if you think your place of employment would be interested in being a drop site let me know and we can discuss what it would take. Any and all help selling the rest of the shares is deeply appreciated. Spread the word!

Farm News

There isn’t a lot of new farm news. I spent some time in the greenhouse (which is not green by the way) today testing the various electrical/mechanical equipment and thankfully everything worked as designed. This is not always the case, for example this year and of course this other year. So far 2020 is going exactly as planned.

Other than that I’m just gearing up for the preseason home opener on Monday March 2nd, weather permitting. That first day we will be focused on the alliums (onions, leeks and shallots). If you aren’t busy next week feel free to lend a hand (probably should contact me first so I am sure to stick around).

That is it for now. As always send in your questions, comments, suggestions, jokes, brain teasers and any other items of amusement.
