Since we have been completely unsuccessful in our invention of a weather control system we felt maybe we should focus our efforts in another direction. And the direction we are choosing is indoors. Yep. We are moving the farm indoors. To be a bit more clear, we are moving a small piece of the farm indoors. If it is successful maybe we will move more of it inside.
We are starting the construction of a hoop house, or cold frame. The purpose is to provide an environment that will extend the growing season of whatever we plant in it. Though it won’t have any supplemental heat or electricity, it will retain some of the heat from the daytime sun and hopefully keep the plants inside from getting frosted during the one or two nights of cold weather we get in mid September. Our hope is that we can extend the tomato season into October. We also hope we can start the tomato season earlier. All this will be figured out in due time. First we have to put the thing together – of course during a time when the farm work is ramping up as it is.
Of course if this doesn’t work I figure I can sell it to the Vikings since they are looking for a new domed stadium.
Announcements
We are still recruiting for the 2012 season. We are ahead of last year’s pace, which is great, but we’d like to be full by now so we can concentrate on farming. Please send people our way and if they sign up we will credit your account $25. We have a couple people who have brought us more than one referral. Thank you!
For those who sent in a down payment for VeggieShares last year final payment was due in March unless you made other arrangements. Payment for all other shares (Meat, Cheese, Fruit, Coffee, etc.) is due by the end of May.
There is now an order form on the web site for ordering individual boxes of fruit (e.g. blueberries, cherries, Colorado peaches, etc.), beef by the quarter, hogs by the half and chickens by the six-pack.
Herb plants will be ready by May 14th. We will put them in the pick-up tent area so you can pick them up anytime. There will tape on each individual six pack. Please take only the one(s) with your name on it(them). The oregano is a little on the small side. Not sure why it is taking its time growing. It should still work well for you this summer (plus you can over winter it for next year!)
That is all for now. I am sure once I publish this I will think of twelve other things to tell you. As always, feel free to contact me with questions, comments, jokes, brain teasers, or other farm related stuff.
