We’ve had weather all week this week. It never stops. Day after day after day more weather weather weather. Not much you can do about it so we farmers just suffer through.
Not much happening on the farm these days. Just a lot of harvesting, weeding and planting. What? You are still planting? Yup. If we want veggies through October we have to start planting now. And since I am sure everyone is enjoying their broccoli we figured we should plant more for the fall! Of course we haven’t finished with the spring/summer broccoli so don’t worry, there is more on the way before October. We also recently planted more cukes to fill in when the current cukes give up.
Speaking of cukes, here is one of my all time favorite recipes: Voula’s Greek Salad. This recipe comes from a former Greek neighbor of ours. It is as authentic of a Greek Salad as you will ever find. With all the cukes we’ve been harvesting and with hopefully some tomatoes on the way, this would be a wonderful salad to make. In fact, I used the first of the New Girl tomatoes this evening to make this salad. It was delish!
Speaking of New, here is what will be new this week: Nicola potatoes, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, yellow beans, green beans (though there were a few of these last week) and sweet corn. The Nicola potatoes are a solid potato that works well in salads, soups or my favorite, roasted on the grill. I prefer to roast them uncovered to give the potatoes a crispy texture. I simply cut them into bite sized pieces, coat them with olive or other oil and put them in a shallow baking pan on the grill. Turn them every few minutes to prevent sticking. Be patient; it takes a while. Viola! Fantastic roasted potatoes and you didn’t heat up the kitchen. Onions mixed in gives it a different taste and texture. The liquid from the onions tends to steam the potatoes and you get less crispyness. Both ways are great and tasty!
Expectation setting time: The first round of sweet corn seems to be on the small side. I’m not sure why. Could be due to being blown down when it was silking. Could be due to something completely different. In any case, it still tastes great for an early variety. Hopefully we will find enough good ears to give out this week.
The cauliflower is just starting to be ready. I’m not sure how many we will get this week…
We have lots and lots of beans – both green and yellow. Start looking for bean recipes. This is one of my favorite recipes – Cauliflower Potato Curry. It uses beans, potatoes and cauliflower. I suppose one could use just about any vegetable in this dish. Served with rice it is fantastic.
What else will there be? Well, we still have broccoli, fennel (on-farm members give this a try!!), cabbage, cucumbers, broccoli, summer squash (they look to be rebounding from their slow down last week), onions, basil, maybe swiss chard and kale if we decide to harvest more, a few slicing tomatoes, and eggplants. The beets are mostly done for the time being. We will plant more for the fall. Same with kohlrabi. There might be other things I am forgetting about so don’t be surprised if you see something not on this list.

We are starting a new share called RoosterShare. It is very reasonably priced (FREE) and comes with two roosters. If anyone would like a rooster or two please let me know. We’d like to stop feeding them since they won’t be producing any eggs for us.
