What’s “news” on the farm this week? You’ll have to read through the announcements first before you find out!
Announcements
We are still taking orders. We had a few new customers join this past week – YAY! – but we could still use more. We’ll load up your account with $25 for every new member who joins and says they heard about us from you! And don’t forget to tell them about our no risk guarantee. Keep spreading the word!
And as I mentioned last week, please consider ordering some of our add-on products like cheese, fruit, coffee, flowers and meat (though our partnership with TC Farm). Every order helps!
Farm News
This past Sunday I was working in the field planting popcorn, flowers, winter squash, pumpkins and probably a few other things. Mid afternoon I get a call from a local yet unknown number. A number that could have a potential member on the other end or more likely a spam call where they tell me, “Wait. Don’t hang up. This is an important…” which is about as far as I get before I hang up. I was never good at following directions. Figuring it was a Sunday and robocallers don’t work on Sundays (Ha!) I decided to answer it. It was a voice from my past. Just about a year in the past to be precise. It was my good friend Gordon Severson from KARE 11 TV.
For those of you who don’t click on links in articles like the one above but still wonder why they were linked, here is where I should mention Gordon stopped by last Spring to discuss the weather, which is why he was calling again this year. I’m starting to think Gordon wants to take Belinda’s place as Chief Meteorologist at KARE since he is always calling me to talk about the weather. But then I realized that he wasn’t the only reporter to come out to talk about the weather. Back in 2014 Kate Renner of KSTP stopped by (this is a good read so if you have time you should click on this link). I’m starting to get suspicious that all reporters want to talk about the weather.
Anyway, we setup a time later that day for him to come out, ask a few questions, take some video and discuss how this season’s cold, wet weather will affect what we’ll see at the farmers’ markets and CSA shares this summer. He put me in a tough spot. How do I give him something to put in his report that is positive yet still answers the question about the effect of cold, wet weather on this season’s crops, which is of course negative? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out.
And as you will see from the video I had no time to “freshen up”. If I had a bit more time I could have at least shaved and lost a few pounds. But there are deadlines to meet so the whole world gets to see what I look like on a normal farm day.
I won’t steal the thunder (see I told you we like to talk about the weather) and tell you all that is in the video but I will say all-in-all I think it came out quite positive. The tractor started, which is always questionable. Nobody got hurt. We kept working as we talked (I should have put Gordon to work. What was I thinking?) and finished planting the winter squash before sunset. So it was an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon. Plus there were no gotcha questions this time.
As a footnote, I was watching KARE 11 news on Monday at 5:00 (the original report was the LEAD STORY on Sunday’s 10:00 newscast. Must have been a slow news day) where they were again talking about the weather and during the segment they showed me again driving the tractor! Two stories in two days. I can’t wait for the residuals to start rolling in.
