T-minus One Week and Counting

Heads of Lettuce

One week to go before the home opener! Must be time to send out some valuable information! So lets get started.

Last chance to purchase fruit, and cheese. Last chance to talk someone into joining or joining yourself if you haven’t already, though we could prorate all our different shares if you still can’t make up your mind. Flowers won’t start for a couple more weeks or so.

Speaking of cheese, if you ordered CheeseShare and want to swap out some of the default selections please do so before the end of this week. To swap just send me an email with the items you want removed and the cheese you’d like instead. You can find the default selections here. Also remember that CheeseShare changed to monthly instead of semi-weekly.

You should have received an email from me with directions on how and where to pick-up your produce. If you did not receive the email please contact me so we can figure out where the email went. Be sure to read the email since there may be important changes, and for on-farm pick-up, changes in pick-up hours. Let me know if you have any questions.

Farm News

With our late, cool and wet Spring many of our plants are delayed compared to earlier, warmer, and sunnier Springs. This last week really helped move them along but was still not enough to overcome the slow start. However some plants have appreciated the cool, wet weather and are ready to harvest. So that’s what we will do. Most likely this first week will be all about bok choi and lettuce. We night have a few other things thrown in but not many. But it is beautiful bok choi and lettuce and we’d hate to see it go to waste. Plus starting off slowly we can all build up the necessary digestive bacteria to reacquaint our digestive tract to fresh, delicious locally-grown vegetables. Anything more could be a shock to the system!

We’ve planted most of what we plant for the season except for a few successions of summer vegetables and a few of the fall crops. Our focus over the last couple of weeks is all about weeds and pests. I feel we are doing a pretty good job managing both right now but it doesn’t take much for either or both to get out of control. A week of wet weather and we’ll be behind significantly. A week with a good soaking rain followed by a five days of dry weather would be perfect! A farmer can dream can’t he?

The other major task this past week and this coming week is getting the equipment and areas ready for washing, packing and delivering the produce. We spent a full day washing all the harvest, storage and delivery totes and crates. This week we’ll label the delivery totes and deep clean the wash, storage and packing areas. We’ll also test the walk-in cooler to ensure it is functioning properly. Getting ready for the start of the season is almost as complicated as launching a rocket into space, but far more tasty and nutritious!

Other than farming and preparing for the season there isn’t time for anything else. So, unless there are questions I will leave you to whatever you were doing prior to me sending your this info.

As always, if you have questions, comments, suggestions, jokes, brain teasers or any other interesting tidbit do not hesitate to contact me.
