The Last Week

This is the last week of the season!  If you stop by next week we will put you to work, so feel free to stop by next week.  Otherwise consider buying Winter FruitShare so we can see you all winter long!

And while you are ordering winter FruitShare you might as well sign up for 2019.  Join before the end of October and lock in 2018 prices for 2019 produce.

I tried some of the popcorn this weekend; it was not ready.  The kernels popped but I did not get big, puffy popcorn flakes (that’s what a popped popcorn is called, a flake).  It had a very crunchy texture and wasn’t all that unpleasant but wasn’t what most people would think of as popcorn.  So wait a few more weeks before you try yours.

Last week it was finally dry enough to do the things that needed to get done.  We haven’t finished them all yet but we did get through quite a few.  And we couldn’t have done it without a lot of help.  On Friday we had a group from St. Paul’s Monastery — about 20 people or so — come out and lend a hand planting garlic and harvesting Brussels sprouts.  They were so good at it that we got almost all of the garlic planted (we would have had it all planted but it turned out to take up more room than we initially anticipated and so I had to get another bed ready) and most of the BS harvested (which wasn’t even on our initial plan).  As you probably know I invited the whole membership to come out and help in the afternoon in case we didn’t finish the planting by the time our morning Monastery crew had to leave.  But since the garlic planting was mostly done we were able to use the afternoon crowd to finish the BS and harvest a row of potatoes.  Yay!

It always surprises me how much work gets done when you have a lot of people.  It also surprises me how much energy it takes to keep all the parts moving, though I’m sure an experienced crew would be easier to manage and require less supervision and less energy.  Even though we had fast learners it was still tricky to keep everyone busy planting the garlic and keeping the different varieties separate without leaving gaps.  But we managed for the most part.  So thank you to all who were able to help!  Now we have to wait until next year to see if we were successful.

What will we have this week?  A whole lotta BS.  Also shallots, onions, potatoes, garlic, the rest of the winter squash, the rest of the leeks, the rest of the carrots, the rest of the tomatoes, a few peppers, some leftover lemongrass, some kale, a few daikon radishes, and I suppose a few other odds and ends.

We have the potatoes for WinterShare.  Otherwise no other shares this week.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, suggestions, jokes, etc. and don’t forget to sign-up for 2019!
