This is the last week of the season!
A few announcements:
We are taking orders for the 2016 season. Join now and lock in this year’s price for next season’s produce. We’ve already hit double digits in 2016 membership so it won’t be long now until we hit the triple digits! There are two ways to order 2016 shares. You can send in or deliver a check for $100 deposit or you can order it from our online store. Either way works for me.
If you enjoyed the 2015 season why keep this great news to yourself? Spread the love and tell your friends, coworkers, neighbors, family and people you bump into at Target. Tell them to mention your name when they order and we will credit your account $25. If you did not enjoy the season please let us know why. We are always looking for ways to improve.
Last chance to order potatoes, onions, shallots, and garlic. On-farm people can pick-up these extras when you pick-up your produce. Drop-site members let me know what you want and follow-up with payment; we will send it out with this week’s delivery. Potatoes are $1/lb, onions $1/lb, shallots $2/lb and garlic $10/lb.
Speaking of potatoes: We still have four rows of potatoes to dig with more than enough potatoes in storage to make it to the end of the season. So as I mentioned in a previous newsletter, lets plan on having a season ending gleaning for the foodshelf get-together on Saturday November 7th (weather permitting) starting at 1:00 and going until everything is picked, washed and packed for delivery; I will deliver the food to the foodshelf the following week. After we complete the harvest we can have another bonfire and potluck dinner. Who’s in?
Sweet potatoes: We weighed the sweet potatoes this morning. By eliminating the partially eaten potatoes we came a little bit short of an even number of pounds/share. So we added in a few of the larger sampled potatoes into the mix. If you get one of these you may have to cut a bit off the end of the potato but there is still plenty of eating on each of these tubers. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, it is best to let the sweet potatoes sit for a few weeks prior to consuming. This will increase the sweetness of the sweet potato. Thanksgiving would be an ideal time to eat them.
Besides sweet potatoes, what will we have this week? In addition to sweet potatoes we will have regular potatoes (fingerlings, romance and German butterball), carrots (a few purple ones, though not many), onions, shallots, leeks, Brussels sprouts, celery, celeriac, kale, radishes, maybe some daikon radishes, cabbage, Napa cabbage, broccoli, beets, salad mix, kohlrabi, winter squash and pumpkins. Of course not everyone will get all of these, especially since it is the end of the season and some of it is in short supply. Nonetheless, there is a substantial amount of delicious produce this week so be sure to pick-up your share!
WinterShare potatoes will be delivered/available this week. There are three kinds of potatoes in the mix: Romance — a red skinned potato that we have been giving out lately, German Butterball — a delicious yellow potato, and a fingerling potato whose name escapes me right now. All of these store fairly well when given ideal conditions. It is best to keep them cold and dark. A fridge works well but that would take up valuable cold space. So any cool, dark place would work.
SeafoodShare and SalmonShare arrived on Sunday. Plan to pick-up your shares this week!
No EggShare, CheeseShare, CoffeeShare, FruitShare or MeatShare this week.
I guess that is enough for now. I already put in 13 hours today so you’ll have to wait for another less busy day for any more info from the farm. As always, do not hesitate to send in questions, comments, suggestions, jokes, brain-teasers, etc.
