It is nice to see signs of Spring this early in the season. Let’s hope it is here to stay.
A couple quick announcements:
Payment for 2016 shares is due this month unless you signed up for a payment plan. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Payment for other shares (Meat, Cheese, Fruit, Eggs, Coffee, Seafood, Ice Cream, and Bread) is due in May though you are certainly welcome to pay now. Please give some consideration into purchasing these products from us. The people who supply these items are similar small businesses growing food sustainably so purchasing from us helps these companies survive. Plus they are really delicious products! Let me know as soon as possible if you do want to add these items so we can plan accordingly.
We still have shares available. Please tell all your friends, co-workers, social media contacts, neighbors, church organizations, book clubs, mothers groups, fathers groups, uncles groups and anyone else you happen to bump into as you go about your daily routine. With all the new competition in the CSA business it is getting more challenging to replace members who opt out due to life changes. Have your friend put your name in the “Where did you hear about us?” box on the order form and we will credit your account $25.
Halibut orders are due by March 15th.
Farm News
Other than the garlic starting to pop out from its long winter slumber, the only other major event happening on the farm is the opening of the greenhouse. It was opened on March 1st after February overstayed its welcome by one day. Not much to report from the opening. I simply moved the wood that holds the door shut out of the way, walked in and turned on the heat. Quite uneventful. This first week I planted the alliums – onions, shallots and leeks. These take a long time to grow so they are the first to get started. This coming week will be the first round of brassicas – Brussels sprouts, kale, and broccoli. Kohlrabi grows faster than these other brassicas so we wait a few weeks to get them started. I will also start some rosemary from cuttings this week. Plants grown from rosemary seeds have varying flavor profiles so it is best to propagate rosemary asexually (can I say that in a family posting?) by rooting cuttings from our mother plant.
For the next month or so it will be all about greenhouse seeding. We typically don’t get out into the field until mid-April. However, if the weather stays warm, we may be able to plant in the field by the end of the month! It happened once before, but only once.
That is all for now. As always, feel free to send in questions, comments, jokes, payments, etc.
