Let the Games Begin!

green garlicLET’S GET READY TO RUMMMMBBBBLLLLLLEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

VeggieShare starts this week!  It has been a struggle to get the farm to this stage this spring.  So much to grow, so little time.  Eight inches of snow on May 2nd certainly didn’t help.  But we made it this far and there is no turning back.  This first week and probably the next will be a little on the short side.  We could not plant any of our usual April plantings that usually fill the first couple weeks of shares.  So we are filling them with the quick growing May planted crops.  What could that possibly be?  Well, I am glad you asked.  We figure we have bok choi, green garlic, radishes, probably green onions, probably Swiss chard and probably lettuce.  I say probably because it appears there are some of each of these ready, the questions is how many.  By Monday of next week we will probably also have summer squash.  Keep your fingers crossed for snap peas next week!

Veggie of the week.

The veggie of the week this week is green garlic.  What is green garlic?  It is a garlic plant that hasn’t matured yet — much like a green onion is an immature onion.  Green garlic is milder than garlic bulbs but can be used in the same dishes — and many more.  I like to grind it up in the food processor then throw in a block of cream cheese for garlic cream cheese.  I suppose you could do something similar for garlic butter!  Delish!  You can eat all parts of the green garlic except for maybe the roots.  Eat it fresh or cook it.  Let your imagination run wild!

Announcements

Last call for CheeseShare.  We have a standard offering but you can swap varieties.  CheeseShare comes from a small, family-owned organic dairy in western Wisconsin — Castle Rock Farm.  They raise their cows on pasture to make their raw milk cheese.  A very tasty addition to your veggies!  Price is $175 for the season.

Last call for delicious, certified organic Blueberries!  Let me know if you’d like to order a flat.  The price is $65 for 12 pints.  They will be delivered with the second week’s VeggieShare.

Two weeks after the blueberries we will have certified organic cherries from the Pacific Northwest.  These are incredibly delicious.  An eight pound box is $63.  Let me know if you’d like to order some.

Another call for SalmonShare.  If you’d like to enjoy wild, line-caught salmon from Alaska this might just be the product for you!  This salmon comes from small boat fishermen and fisherwomen – no big trawlers sending your fish off to China before it comes back to the US.  Help support independent, small businesses by buying SalmonShare!

We can still take orders for EggShare.  Let me know if you’d like to add farm fresh eggs to your account.  EggShare, CheeseShare and FruitShare start the second week of the season then are every two weeks.

If you’d like to try a bag of Coffee from Velasquez Family Coffee prior to committing to CoffeeShare feel free to let me know which one you’d like to try.  The price for a 12 oz bag of regular roast (four different varieties) is $9.00.  Flavored coffees in 8 oz bags are $6.50. There is also decaf coffee.   See our web site for varieties.

Anyone interested in being the Stillwater drop site delivery person?  We credit your account $25 for each member you deliver to the drop site.  Please contact me ASAP if you can help out!

No FlowerShare yet.  The plants need more time to grow.

I think that is all for now.  If I think of anything else I will add an addendum.
