Happy Independence Day!

Being the 4th of July week there won’t be anyone around to read this so this newsletter will be on the short side.  Plus it is a very nice day out there and there is a lot to do!

Most importantly, our vegetables don’t celebrate Independence Day – especially that Swiss chard, so we are open our usual hours this week.  Plan to pick-up your shares at your usual place and time.

Anyone interested in ShroomShare?  I found a farm that can supply us organically grown Oyster Mushrooms.  How cool is that?  We have a minimum order size that we have to meet so I need to see what level of interest there is.  Here is a brief description of oyster mushrooms:

“Oyster mushrooms have been called “The Designer Mushroom” due to their beautiful shape and color, and their unique flavor.  Their flavor profile falls somewhere between a standard button mushroom and a shiitake: they have their own unique taste, but they don’t overpower other ingredients like a shiitake sometimes can.  Because oyster mushrooms blend well with other elements of a dish, they can be used in many different applications.”

ShroomShare will start in a couple weeks and go every other week for a total of six pick-ups.  If there is a lot of interest we can look into an every week arrangement.  The small ShroomShare will be a 4 oz package priced at $27 for the six weeks.  The large ShroomShare will be an 8 oz package priced at $48 for six weeks.  If we get enough interest there is a chance next season we can expand this to include other types of mushrooms.

Please get back to me soon if you are interested.  Let me know what size you would like.

Thank you to all our Pinterest pinners for pinning pins to our Pinterest boards.  I found a nice Swiss chard recipe that I guess I had pinned there some time ago: Sautéed Swiss chard with Parmesan cheese.  It’s on the “Leafy Green Recipes” board.  Check it out www.pinterest.com/FreshEarthFarms

We need some actors of all ages for a couple video projects we are working on.  There is not a lot of memorization of lines – one line at the most – but you need to be outgoing.  If you are interested please let me know.  I will be recruiting in the tent as well.  Not sure when filming will start but we will most likely film a bunch of different times and use the power of editing software to make it all look seamless.  Now when am I going to find the time to learn about video editing?

Wait, why are we making videos?  For the First Annual Fresh Earth Farms Fall Film Fest to be held on September 7th.  Mark your calendar and send in your videos.  They can be your own creation or gleaned from the internet.  Must be family friendly and under six minutes in length.  This will be THE event of the fall social season.

For all you EggShare members: The eggs come in a big egg box so plan to bring egg cartons when you pick up.  We will pack them for the drop site members (in reused cartons so don’t think the eggs you are getting come from Cub Foods no matter what the label says).

This week we have no other shares, just veggies.  Actually, we also have flowers this week!

We will have Cherries next week for FruitShare. If you’d like to add an eight pound box of the most delicious cherries ever, please let me know.  These cherries come from a small, 5 acre orchard in Washington.  All cherries are hand-picked at their peak flavor; they go through the trees several times to ensure all that they pick are ripe.  Price is $63.

We can also get more blueberries if anyone is interested.  This last batch of blueberries was fantastic.  I wish we bought two since we ate over half of them already – none left for freezing.  The price for the blueberries is $65 for a 12 pint box.

What will we have this week?  My best guess is lettuce, snap peas, very few snow peas, lettuce, green onions, garlic scapes, lettuce, chard, zucchini, summer squash, lettuce, radishes, bok choi, probably beets, probably kohlrabi and lettuce.  We need to harvest the lettuce before the deer finish it off…

That is all for now.  I thought it was going to be short but alas there is just TMI (too much information).
