I thought this comic was pretty funny. I hope the lawyers who work for Tundra Comics think it is funny that I thought this was funny…
Just a quick update to let you know what we expect this week. The raccoons have arrived so it is time to harvest corn. We tried some tonight for dinner — roasted on the grill — and it was delicious. I felt that we are about two days from perfectly ripe corn but by grilling it the sugars were concentrated. We will do our best to only pick the ripe ones but a few may slip past in these first couple days.
Also, cauliflower is ready to harvest! This year we did not band the leaves to blanch the heads so the cauliflower will be yellowish. We have banded it in the past but we found that we got a lot more rotted heads. My speculation is that with the heads covered, rain and dew can get in but the water doesn’t evaporate giving a great place for pathogens to grow. We shall see if not banding helps. The yellow color does not affect the taste. We had a sample head this past weekend and it was the best tasting cauliflower I’ve had. We just steamed it and ate it — nothing fancy. This year we grew a different variety than we have grown in the past; I think it is working out pretty well. Send in your cauliflower recipes!
Speaking of cauliflower, be on the lookout for cabbage worms and loopers. We grow everything organically so sometimes the pests go along for the ride. These two critters hang out on the brassicas, mostly broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. We have found that when we soak the heads in water for a while (an hour works great but who has that kind of time) the pests fall off. We spray a bacteria on the plants that gets some of the pests but never gets all of them. Besides they are pretty small and don’t eat much…
We also harvested some of the carrots today. With all the rain this last month and a half we have not been able to keep the weeds from overtaking the carrots. However we managed to rustle a few out of the bushes.
So, besides corn, cauliflower and carrots, what else can you expect? Well there will be beans — both green and yellow, cucumbers, summer squash/zucchini, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, cherry tomatoes and maybe some larger tomatoes by Friday or Monday. I’m sure there are some other things I’m forgetting, oh yeah, kohlrabi! As you can see we are moving quickly into the summer vegetables. And just in case you didn’t notice, garlic scapes are not in the above list.
