It is such a beautiful day today that I don’t have time to write a lot for this newsletter. Where is the rain when you need it? I was planning on writing it yesterday when they forecasted storms for Monday morning but as we all experienced there were no storms – not even a drop of rain. I wish I could be so wrong and still have my job.
Anyway first things first – or should I say Fourth things first!
Fourth of July!
Plants do not take the fourth off. They are hard working and never stop. So we can’t either. What does that mean? It means that we will be working on July 4th along side the plants and those of you who pick-up on the 4th should plan to pick-up at your usual place and time. If you pick-up at a drop site and do not plan on picking up your produce nor have anyone else pick up your produce please let us know so we don’t send it.
First Week of the Season
The first week went pretty well. No major problems and only a glitch or two. Surprising really. Let’s hope the rest of the season works as well!
No FruitShare this week however our next FruitShare will be cherries (subject to change if they aren’t ready in time). In the past these have been spectacular. They come from a small, family orchard in Washington State. Each cherry is hand picked at the peak of ripeness. They go through the trees multiple times to ensure each cherry is delicious. If you would like to order a box of cherries a la carte please let me know by Monday morning. The price is $63 for an eight pound box. And who couldn’t eat an eight pound box of cherries in one sitting?
MeatShare
MeatShare will be here on Friday. Plan to pick up your MeatShare at the farm at your next pick-up time.
CheeseShare
No CheeseShare this week.
This week’s Share
Things change quickly here on the farm. Last week we were struggling to fill the shares. Not that we didn’t have a lot of stuff. We just didn’t have a lot of variety. That changes this week. What’s new you ask? Well, let’s start with what returns from last week and add to it those things that are new. We will have green onions, green garlic, bok choi, and swiss chard. Added to that we will have garlic scapes, snap peas, snow peas, radishes, lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, summer squash (limited quantity) and beets. Be aware that you will not receive some of each of these. Many items will be paired with others so you will have to make choices. For delivery boxes we will make the choices for you. We keep track of what goes into the boxes each week so we don’t overwhelm you with the same stuff week after week. It may seem unclear at this time and I could spend the next three hours explaining it but I think most people will figure it out and there is just too much nice weather out there to spend the day inside.
And now for some pictures from the farm.
The corn is starting to tassel! The tassel is the male part of the plant. Much like college students, the males show up at the party before the females.
It is getting hot in here! Turn on the air conditioners.
Lot’s of brassicas! Should be harvesting the broccoli next week.
The winter squash plants are starting to vine — and flower!
Garlic Scapes on the garlic plants. They will be off the plant by the end of today.
