Farm Poetry

The Invasion of the Body Snatchers

As the season progresses I find I start running out of things to write about.  So, as I always do in this situation, I resort to poetry.  Everyone likes poetry, with the rhyming and the … rhyming.  What’s not to like about poetry?  But I am a lazy poet.  Maybe lazy isn’t the word.  I am a concise poet.  So I write concise poems.  And the form of poetry I find most concise is the Haiku.  So without further ado, here is this season’s Farm Haiku.

Delicious lettuce
All different shapes and colors
Wish the deer left some

Red and green cabbage
Wonderful, tasty cabbage
Please, no more cabbage

Hot, sweltering temps
Say good-bye to broccoli
Say hi to okra!

Black and green spider
Hangs out by the pick-up tent
Lost seven members

Need more tomatoes
Season extending hoop-house
Heirloom abundance!

Where are the spu-uds
They were planted here somewhere
Plus-size leafhoppers

Forecast calls for rain
Planted winter cover crop
Still waiting for rain

Thirty ears of corn
Nine tasty sweet bell peppers
Need a new freezer

A pile of bull frogs
Black tiger salamander
AmphibianShare

Love the vegetables
How much longer does this go?
Six more weeks this year

Garlic planting time
Saturday October six
Mark your calendars

What will we have this week? Glad you asked.  We will continue to inundate you with peppers.  They are going insane!  We will also have more tomatoes; maybe as many as last week, maybe not.  We will also have tomatillos, beans, onions, garlic, carrots, cherry tomatoes, cabbage, and some other things that currently escape me.

CheeseShare and MeatShare are available for those who haven’t picked up yet.

No FruitShare this week.

We have plenty of canning tomatoes if anyone is interested.  $15 for a half bushel.  We deliver (to drop sites).

The Garlic Planting Gala will be held Saturday, October 6th from 2:00 until it is complete.  Following the planting we will have a bonfire and dinner.  Please let me know if you are planning to come and how many people will be with you.  If you would like to help with the after-planting festivities please contact me, we could use assistance.

Finally if anyone wants to send in their own haiku for the 2012 season please do not hesitate.  If I get a good response I won’t have to come up with something next week.

Here is a recipe for all the beans you are getting.  Plus it uses tomatoes!  Thank you Sue: http://www.whatsyourhealthy.com/

Green Bean Salad

Sea salt

1 pound slender green beans, ends trimmed

1 cup feta cheese crumbles

1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half

2 tablespoons chopped red onion

1/2 cup slivered almonds

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

1 large clove garlic, minced

Freshly ground black pepper

Boil a large pot of salted water. Add the green beans and cook until tender crisp, 1 to 2 minutes. Use a spider to remove to a bowl of ice water. Drain well, pat dry and place the beans in a large bowl. Combine with the feta cheese, tomatoes and red onions.

Toast the almonds in a small skillet, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove to a plate.

Whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, basil, garlic and some salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the green beans and sprinkle with the toasted almonds. Let marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour before serving.
