Farm News

The most important farm news is that the weather is uncooperative. Frost or 100 degrees. Choose one! I don’t know of any plants besides weeds that like both ends of the growing temperature spectrum. Cool season crops like cool weather. Warm season crops like warm weather. It was really hard on the warm season crops to suffer through a couple of nights of frost at the end of May. The cool season crops loved it. But now it is their turn to pay. These 90+ degree days are wreaking havoc with the cool season crops, though even the warm season crops are requiring frequent water.

So what does that mean for the first few weeks? Well, the cool season crops will probably be smaller than typical. We have some nice looking lettuce in the hoop house and the bok choi is looking good. We’ll give these out in these next two weeks but after that I’m not sure there will be more. The broccoli is already heading up even though the plants are not that big. This results in really small broccoli heads. we’re not sure what we’ll do with these. I’m still hoping the peas survive. They have so far, surprisingly .

The bottom line is to not be surprised if these first few weeks look a little sparse. We felt it was better to get started and hand out the lettuce before it bolts than to try to get more into the first week by delaying the start a week. Who knows, maybe by next week it will be in the 50s again.

That is all for now. Let me know if you have any questions and keep a lookout for the pick-up instructions. Let me know if you have any questions.
