Downward Dug

yoga volunteersThis Saturday we had a group of yoga instructors from Core Power Yoga on Grand Avenue come out to help on the farm.  There were around 12 or so of the most fit and flexible volunteers we’ve ever had.  It was a beautiful day with moderate temperatures, which was unfortunate for those who like hot yoga.  Certainly not the most sweaty day of the week (that would be last Wednesday).

They are a fun bunch of hard working people.  We quickly worked through the last bed of garlic.  It was great getting the garlic project finished.  Having an extra 12 people made it far easier.

After the garlic we moved on to digging the two Yukon Gold potato rows.  We didn’t have time to wash and weigh them (the potatoes not the volunteers) but there should be enough to give everyone a pile o’ potatoes.  All this was done in a little over two hours!  Thank you Core Power Yoga for helping harvest the garlic and potatoes!

On another note, we solved the eggplant issue by donating somewhere north of 200 eggplants to Loaves & Fishes.  We felt that the amount of eggplant we were giving out was putting people in jeopardy of being overwhelmed and not enjoying their shares.  So we contacted former employee Rachel and asked if she could use some eggplant.  I don’t know if she knew what she was agreeing to.  Nonetheless, she took them and this week there will be many more people enjoying eggplant!  The eggplants appear to be slowing down on their flower production, which of course will slow down the fruit production.  So we shouldn’t be overwhelming you with eggplant anymore this season.

Yachiyo DinnerFinally, we’ve had a few people share pictures on our Facebook page of their shares and the meals they are making with their shares.  It is great to see how you are using your produce and add-on share items.  Please feel free to post your pictures on our page.  I’m not a Facebook professional so I don’t know how it works but I hope by sharing the pictures on our page others will see them and be inspired.

What will we have this week? Well, certainly potatoes.  Plus cucumbers, eggplant, squash, onions, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, beans, some tomatillos, some kohlrabi, some cauliflower, some cabbage, some broccoli, some fennel, maybe basil, some peppers, and if we have time carrots.

MeatShare continues from Friday.

BreadShare is every week.

FlowerShare continues.

No other shares this week.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, suggestions, issues, jokes and other items of interest.
