Bear With Us

I’m writing this as I eat one of my favorite summer treats — leftover Greek salad — for lunch so I don’t have much time.

Things are getting a little wild around here.  Yesterday afternoon my neighbor stopped by with the attached picture.  Apparently there is a bear roaming around the neighborhood.  We haven’t seen it but I am starting to wonder if we have been misplacing the blame for the sweet corn parties on the deer or raccoons when it could actually be a black bear.  He certainly looks well fed and cuddly!  I’ll have to take a closer look to see if I can find tracks or other traces of a bear in the corn.  Based on the amount of destruction I wouldn’t be surprised if he/she is the culprit.  Anyway, we named him Roman since he’s roamin’ the neighborhood.

Other than being on bear watch we are just doing the usual — mostly harvesting and washing produce.  We are 3/4 of the way through harvesting the garlic.  It is an unpleasant job since it didn’t grow very big this year.  Its like drinking Miller Light — another unpleasant job.  The same great taste with 1/3 the calories.

So what will we have this week? More sweet corn but not as much as last week.  More squash but not as much as last week.  More tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and beans.  Some fennel, cabbage, eggplant, cauliflower, and peppers.  And carrots!  Plus maybe other things I haven’t thought of.

We also have FruitShare, CheeseShare, EggShare and FlowerShare this week.

This week’s brain teaser: Say you have 100 pounds of cucumbers you are trying to dehydrate and the cucumbers are 99% water when you start the dehydration process.  How much would your cucumbers weigh when they are down to 98% water?
