Short and Sweet

A Tub Full of Pumpkins

This Saturday, October 3rd, from 1:00 until done we will have our annual Gigantic Annual Garlic Gala, the socialest event of the whole social season! This is an opportunity for our members to get to know some of our other members while socializing at social distance while planting garlic of course. We can use as many people as we can get. There are activities for those who can crawl around in the dirt and activities for those who can not. Please let me know if you can help out. Many hands make light work. The forecast calls for sunny skies and fragrant winds.

In past seasons we have offered a winter FruitShare. Winter FruitShare is like summer FruitShare but with winter fruit. It is an every other week program (with some exceptions around the holidays) where you get approximately 10 pounds of mixed organic fruit. One difference is we only have two pick-up locations: the farm and our Cathedral area drop site near 94 and Dale St. I don’t yet have pricing but if you are interested let me know. We need a minimum number of people to make it worthwhile. It is a great way to brighten up a cold, winter day!

Farm News

I changed back to Farm News since we had no challenges this past week. Everything went completely smoothly. At least as far as I can recall. We got all the squash harvested and they are currently curing in the patent pending curing chamber. “Why does it need curing? Is it sick?” might be what some of you are thinking. No it isn’t sick, though some of it may have blemishes that need to heal. Curing also helps it become sweeter and store longer. Some of the squash we already gave out wasn’t cured but we expected that you’d eat it soon after getting it. Most of the squash we give out from here on will have gone through the curing process. That doesn’t mean it will last forever. Squash is a living organism and is susceptible to rotting. So keep an eye on it and if it starts to get soft use it quickly (or cook and freeze it). Any soft spots can be removed and the rest should be fine. If you have any problems with the squash please let me know, and if possible include a photo of the problem. We can’t open up the squash to determine its health so we rely on you to keep us informed.

What will we have this week?

Well, winter squash of course. Plus lots of broccoli, onions, garlic, some Napa cabbage, some regular cabbage, green beans, a few tomatoes, a few tomatillos, a few peppers, some daikon radishes, some beets, a bit of salad mix and a few other things I can’t recall at this time.

This week we have FruitShare, EggShare and FlowerShare, which will be pumpkins and/or gourds.

That’s it for now. Short and sweet, just like our winter squash. And please let me know if you can help out at this year’s GAGG!
