I can’t believe it is already February. What can I say. Happy New Year? Time certainly flies when it’s 30 below zero.

Before I get into anything interesting (actually I’m not sure anything I write at this time of year is “interesting”) I thought I should first mention a couple of things. We are still taking orders for the 2019 season. Tell all your colleagues, your neighbors and both of your friends. Use social media (has to be good for something right?) We had good success in the past when people mentioned us on NextDoor. Anyway, we are about halfway to our goal for this season. It would be nice to be sold out before the end of February. Thanks in advance for spreading the word!

Second, if you were a member last season and plan to rejoin this season please do so soon. We’d hate to have you miss out if we sell out!

Third, if you put down a deposit for your share remember the rest of the payment is due in March. Of course we will take payments earlier as well.

Fourth, we have pricing for FruitShare, CoffeeShare, FlowerShare and WinterShare so if you would like to order any of these you can visit our online store!

Fifth, if you haven’t tried popping your popcorn now is as good of a time as any. We had great success with ours so I suspect unless you stored yours in a humid location it should be equally sufficiently dried to pop.

Speaking of 30 below, I know most of us don’t like it this cold. Heck, I had to do the farm chores everyday this week. No taking time off from feeding the livestock! But even those who don’t have to brave the cold there is a bright side to it — fewer pests this season! Though I haven’t done scientific experiments to prove this to be true, what I have observed is that in seasons following extremely cold winters we seem to have fewer bugs. Of course I may just be looking for fewer bugs to convince myself that this cold weather is actually good for something. Last year I don’t recall it being particularly cold but we did have a very late Spring and last season we had no cucumber beetles — the first time this had ever happened on our farm. So there is that one data point we can extrapolate from.

However with this cold weather my fear is that since we live in a world of averages when we have a cold winter the following summer has to be hot so we have the correct average temperature for our region for the year. If our summer temps are just average the average temp for this year will be below average and therefore not average. And how can the average temperature not be average? I think that is how it is supposed to work. So get ready for an above average temperature summer to compensate for our below average temperature winter. So much science!

Other than the weather there isn’t much else to talk about here on the farm, just the usual tax stuff, seed ordering stuff (if there is something you’d like us to grow let us know ASAP), animal feeding stuff, etc.

So as always, if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, brain teasers, jokes, etc. do not hesitate to send them my way!
