BS

Let me tell you about all the BS here on the farm, but first a few announcements.

We’re hoping to have the Garlic Planting Gala on Sunday, October 14th from 1:00 until done or 4:00, whichever comes sooner.  Of course if the ground hasn’t dried sufficiently by then we may have to postpone again.  The forecast seems to indicate there is a high chance of this postponement.  So check the web site before heading out.

We will be starting to deliver the Winter Storage Shares this week.  We have the squash, onions, garlic and shallots packed.  We are waiting for drier weather and soil to dig the potatoes.

We are still taking orders for 2019.  Tell your two friends and anyone else you may know.  Reserve your share by the end of October and receive this year’s price for next season’s produce!

For those who haven’t joined the Facebook group Fresh Earth Forum you should give it a try.  There have been some great recipes shared.  The bacon, leek, potato soup with roasted garlic sound delicious!

Farm News

I’m not sure anyone else caught this in last week’s testimony.  I know it surprised me.

“I ate sprouts with my friends. Almost everyone did. Sometimes I had too many sprouts. Sometimes others did. I like sprouts. I still like sprouts. But I did not eat sprouts to the point of blacking out.” — Bart O’Kavanaugh

Of course he was referring to Brussels sprouts, one of the few vegetables with a capitalized first name.  And then there was the question about “boofing” where Bart replied “flatulence”, which of course came from having too many Brussels sprouts.  Who knew candidates for the Supreme Court loved BS so much!

Anyway, I bring this up because it is all quite timely.  This week’s big treat is BS — otherwise knows as Brussels sprouts.  We have a lot of BS this season for two reasons: 1) It grew really well and really tall, and 2) it is one of the first items we plant in the greenhouse in the Spring and so we planted enough for the number of shares we tried to sell instead of the number we actually sold, which is a smaller number.  So you all are the lucky recipients of extra BS!  Maybe this will make you recruit more friends for next season.

What else will we have this week?  The last of the summer crops including tomatoes, eggplant and peppers.  We picked all the tomatoes — ripe or green — since the forecast calls for nothing but rain followed by cold weather.  With that type of forecast the tomatoes won’t ripen and when it turns cold the plants will die.  Same for the peppers.  Most of these are green as well.  The eggplants are purple but fairly small.  I suspect they will be quite tasty though if you like eggplants.  Or course we will also have winter squash and pie pumpkins.  Plus more leeks, garlic and onions.  We’ll add in shallots to this group as well!  We have some potatoes but with the wet soil we can’t dig more so they’ll be matched with something.  We still have five rows of potatoes in the ground.  We also have cabbage and kale and maybe some other things that I’m forgetting.

Recipe of the week

One of my favorite ways to use BS is in a BS and Kale salad.  Here is one recipe:

https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/kale-brussels-sprout-salad-368295

I don’t use the Pecorino since I have never heard of it and don’t know what it is but otherwise I use all the other ingredients.  To cut the kale thinly I just take it off the stem and put it through a food processor using the cutting blade.  I do the same with the BS, or maybe I used the shredding blade, I can’t remember.  Anyway, it works far faster than using a knife for me.  The dressing is flavorful and hides the taste of the other ingredients — perfect!

No other shares except FlowerShare this week, which will be more gourds.

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, suggestions and anything else you feel would be relevant testimony.
