As we harvested the Hubbard squash I felt like Dr. Miles J. Bennel from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Quite terrifying!
Garlic Planting this Saturday 1:00 to 4:00 or until done. Followed by a potluck and bonfire. Please let me know if you will make it. Many hands make light work. Before coming out check our web site in case weather prevents us from planting. If we get rain on Friday it may not be dry enough on Saturday to plant. Hopefully it stays dry and lots of people come lend a hand.
We are still taking orders for next season. To renew your membership simply send in a deposit of $100 or go to our online store and place your order.
As I mentioned last week, we are giving out the Hubbard squash this week. On farm pick-up can select one from the assortment by the tent (one per member). We will deliver the squash to the drop sites; they will be on our near your pick-up tote (one per member). Also as I mentioned last week, here is something I’ve done with hubbards in the past. Of course substitute the hubbard for the pumpkin in the recipe.
Farm News
We had our first killing frost this past Saturday. It wasn’t our first frost of the season though. The previous Saturday there was frost on the top and hood of the truck, but since we didn’t plant anything on the truck this season nothing was killed. This past Saturday the frost was more widespread. One of the casualties was the summer squash. That’s not cheering I’m hearing is it? I checked out records and we’ve had summer squash since the second week of the season. That’s 14 weeks of summer squash. Plus we have a few I picked prior to the frost so those of you who want one last taste can select some in the pick-up tent.
In addition to the summer squash the beans also got frosted. We had picked most of them last week so it wasn’t a big loss. The peppers and eggplants are two other frost sensitive plants. However we used our usual method for keeping them alive. The tomatoes in the hoop house lost the tallest vines but are otherwise still alive. Unfortunately with all the cold, cloudy weather and the shorter days the tomatoes aren’t growing very fast.
Still to come later this month are Brussels sprouts and popcorn!
What will we have this week? This week’s winter squash is carnival (and of course the hubbards). It looks like a festive acorn but I think it tastes better. We are also giving out leeks. They are like onions but different. We are also giving out lemongrass. Lemongrass is frequently used in Thai cooking. This weekend I made a delicious vegetable curry with it. Typically you cut in in half and add it into the cooking soup. Fish it out when done since it isn’t very edible. I believe you can chop it up fine, say with a food processor, if you want to consume it. Otherwise it takes a lot of chewing. We are also giving out potatoes, carrots, cabbage, kale, onions, garlic, and a few odds and ends. And this week’s herb is cilantro, the herb we always think in frost sensitive but in fact in not!
We also have Fruit, Cheese and Eggs this week. FlowerShare is ornamental gourds (delivery folks will get pumpkins since we couldn’t fit all your pumpkins on last week).
As always, do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, jokes, etc.
