Break Time

So much going on at the farm there is no time for writing the newsletter!

Farm News

Well I finally got the parts for the tractor and with the help of member Scott put it back together.  So we all know what that means right?  That’s correct, something else has to break.  This time it is the well pump controller.  Its not like we need to irrigate as of late (except for the hoop house tomatoes) but when we need water we need water.  So we sprung for a new pump controller and $2,500 later we have water again.  I’m hoping this is the last thing to break this year but I suspect it is not.  It seems like we’ve done more repair work than farming this season.

Speaking of tomatoes in the hoop house, they aren’t producing like we would expect.  This week I harvested about 15 pounds.  Far less than I and I assume you would like.  There is a lot of new growth on the plants and new flowers but unless we have a long warm fall I can’t foresee these flowers making it to ripe tomatoes before a frost kills them.  There are still some green tomatoes that should ripen over time but we won’t get the two pounds per share we were getting a few weeks ago.  I wish I could figure out why the slow down.

We have been getting more than our share of rain this past week.  Let’s hope we get a week or more of sunny warm weather so the plants can take advantage of the rain.  If it continues to be damp the diseases will more likely win out; they’ve already claimed the cherry tomatoes.

The squash and pumpkins still look great.  We are going to leave them out for another week or two to get them a bit more ripe.  Expect to start seeing them later this month.

What will we have this week?  Carrots, potatoes, beans, onions, garlic, kale, squash, peppers, cabbage, some okra, a few tomatoes, a few cucumbers, a few tomatillos and a few other odds and ends.

This week we have fruit, cheese, eggs and flowers.

Well this newsletter seems late enough. So until next time feel free to send in questions, comments, suggestions, jokes and anything else of interest.
