Screaming Toward the End of the Season

We are taking orders for 2017.  For those new to the farm, we start recruiting for the next season during the current season.  Makes it easy for people to sign up.  To encourage this type of behavior we offer a special.  If you sign-up in October you can buy next season’s produce at this season’s prices (only for VeggieShares, not for resale items).  There are a couple ways to sign-up.  You can send in a check for $100 deposit.  You can hand me a $100 check or cash during pick-up.  Or you can order online and either send in a check for deposit or pay the full amount using a credit card.  Unfortunately my online store does not allow partial payments when using credit cards.  Whichever way you choose to renew I certainly hope you do.  We appreciated having all of you as customers!

Garlic Planting Party this Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00 with bonfire and potluck to follow.  We could use more volunteers!  A lot more volunteers.  Come see where your food is grown and learn what it take to be a farmer!  Let me know if you can make it.  You don’t need to be here for the whole time.  All ages are welcome.

Speaking of events, anyone interested in a kids potato digging party during MEA?  I’m thinking the afternoon of Thursday October 20th.  Let me know if you are interested.

Farm News

When I wrote the title to this week’s newsletter I felt it reflected how things are going in a couple different ways.  This season seemed to go by incredibly fast.  Each week I felt like we were way behind and borrowing time from the future to cover the needs of the present.  It felt like we were always on the precipice walking along the edge, occasionally teetering toward the wrong side but somehow managing to stay upright and alive.  It seemed like we were moving so fast and staying so busy that we never really knew what we were doing much less what we were doing next.  The future was more uncertain than we’ve ever felt in the past.  So “screaming toward the end…” seemed quite appropriate.

But are we “screaming toward the end…” as in going fast or are we “screaming toward the end…” because of our emotions?  And if it is due to the emotions is it because we are frightened by the future or happy to see it coming to an end?  Or are we screaming because we are trying to escape from something?  So many possibilities, all of which could be the true nature of the title’s meaning.  Yet even I am not sure which it is — or is it all of them?  I’ll let you decide what my intentions are since I’m not really sure.

Anyway, we have three more weeks of the season left.  Three more weeks to try to catch up.  Three more weeks to scream.  Please plan accordingly.

What will we have this week?  Who knows.  We don’t have time to plan this coming week.  But if I were to guess I would say still more potatoes, still more peppers (though if we get a frost this weekend these will come to an end), more onions, garlic,  kohlrabi, maybe kale, maybe chard, and a whole bunch of odds and ends like eggplant, okra, beets, leeks, watermelon radishes, daikon radishes, and a few beans.  Oh, and this week’s item I almost forgot — salad mix!

MeatShare comes on Friday.

BreadShare is as always.

FlowerShare is pretty much wrapping up.  We got very few gourds this year (like 12) so not sure what to do with those.  We’ll check the ornamental corn to see how that did and if it looks reasonable try to get it harvested for this week’s FlowerShare.

As always, do not hesitate to send in your questions, comments, jokes, brain teasers, etc.  Just please don’t scream them at me.
