Shucks and Awe

This is the time of the season when I run out of topic ideas for newsletters.  The time when I am looking for inspiration.  Something to talk about that would be of interest to our membership.  I was sitting at the computer last night stymied as to what to write, and then this came along:

Radar 7-5-16

This is a lesson in “be careful what you wish for”.  As you probably know it has been pretty dry these last few weeks.  We’ve spent a considerable amount of time irrigating just to keep the plants alive.  Oh how we needed rain.  A good soaker.  Well we got it.  I don’t know how much rain we got but it was more than enough.  On the positive side it was at a time when most of the plants are sufficiently large and well rooted that they didn’t get washed away.  On the negative side was this:

horizontal corn

Corn typically grows in a more vertical fashion.  We’ve seen this plenty of times before, practically every year.  And most of the time the corn straightens up with little effect.  But sometimes it grows funky resulting in poor pollination — resulting in poor kernel fill — and making it hard to harvest.  Let’s hope for the former.

All in all I feel at this time the storm was more positive than negative.  Sure some plants are laying down on the job.  Sure some plants may not survive.  But with the rain — and all the free fertilizer the lightning provided — I’m hopeful that it will be a net positive storm.

What will we have this week? Get ready for summer squash/zucchini! It is coming on strong.  Find your favorite zucchini recipes!  We will certainly have more green onions.  If there is one thing we’ve done really well this season it’s green onions.  We will also have kale, chard (hopefully it survived last night’s storm), lettuce, some bok choi, and a few kohlrabi.  We are winding down on both garlic scapes and green garlic but there should be some this week.  There might also be a few odds and ends that I’m not recalling.

Recipe of the week:

Since we will be getting zucchini and summer squash for a few weeks I thought I would include a recipe that we like to make that uses up a fair amount of zucchini.  It is a simple and tasty recipe which is what I consider a perfect recipe.

Step 1: Cut zucchini lengthwise and brush with olive oil (or other suitable oil)

Step 2: Place on grill cut side down and cook until softened.

Step 3: Remove from grill and cut into bite-sized pieces.

Step 4: Mix with your favorite Italian dressing and crumbled feta cheese.

Step 5: Serve either hot or cold, works both ways.

Hopefully you enjoy it as much as we do!

FruitShare, CheeseShare and EggShare are this week.

MeatShare arrived last Friday.

BreadShare goes without saying since it is every week.

FlowerShare is this week (though I haven’t checked them since the storm so cross your fingers).

No Seafood, Ice Cream or Coffee.
