Since it is already Wednesday there is no time for chit-chat so this will be a short newsletter.
The forecast mentioned the low temperature this weekend would be in the high 30s. Since we are typically colder than the surrounding area (it was 37 here this morning when the forecast called for upper 40s) we are bracing for the first frost of the season. Actually we had two frosts earlier in September but both of those were minor and didn’t result in any fatalities. Now we may not have a frost but it doesn’t hurt to prepare for one. The good news is this is one of the later first frosts we’ve had in the last 10 years. Typically by now all the summer crops are dead. This season we continue to harvest lots of tomatoes and peppers (LOTS OF PEPPERS!) I really hope everyone likes peppers.
But we also have all the crops we typically have at this time of year. The result? Lots of produce. Far more than we anticipated when we started the season. I guess this is better than the alternative.
What will we have this week? Peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, tomatillos, carrots, peppers, salad mix, cabbage, peppers, onions, leeks, peppers, kale, chard, peppers, winter squash, pie pumpkins, peppers, fennel, beets, peppers, maybe kohlrabi and definitely peppers.
Other shares this week: Fruit (a mixed box of apples and pears), mushrooms, cheese, eggs, and meat on Friday.
We could use egg cartons!
We have Haralson and Honeycrisp apples, certified organic and locally grown right here in Afton. We have eggs from our pastured chickens. $5/dozen. These can also be delivered.
