Newsletter 9-3-13

IMG_20120706_184428This should be a short newsletter.  There is a LOT of food to harvest!

First and foremost this is another reminder of the upcoming First Annual Fresh Earth Farms Fall Film Fest.  Looks like there will be a great turnout and the weather forecast calls for perfect conditions.  Here are a few pointers to make the day run smoothly:

1  When you get here drive down the long driveway and park on the south (right) side just off the gravel.  We will designate overflow parking if that area gets full.

2 The potato digging is at the far east end of the farm.  After you park start walking in the same direction until you see a tractor and people.

3 The potluck and film fest will be at the house at the end of the driveway.

4 Things to bring:

  1. Something to share at the potluck
  2. Clothes that can get dirty (if you are helping dig potatoes)
  3. Closed-toe shoes (if you want to keep your feet clean while digging potatoes)
  4. Chairs for the film fest/potluck
  5. Blankets, warm clothes, etc. It can get cold here after the sun goes down (but then again who knows what it will be like on Saturday)
  6. Sun screen for the day, bug repellent for the night time
  7. Something to drink if water isn’t sufficient
  8. Lawn games
  9. More films (though sending them ahead of time is preferable)

5 Things not to bring:

  1. Pets

We look forward to a terrific fall get-together.  Please RSVP to the evite sent out a while ago.  If you didn’t receive one then send me email so we know you are coming.

Here is a trailer for our first film; the world premier will be at the film fest!

As mentioned in the email sent out this past weekend we are currently short one employee.  Though we intend to step it up and try to make do with fewer workers, we may run out of time to accomplish some tasks.  The area that will most likely be affected is the cleaning of root vegetables.  We will do what we can to wash them prior to sending them out but we’d rather push that task on to our member than to give you less food.  I hope this doesn’t impose too much of a burden on you.  We are searching for a replacement and hope we can find one soon.  Sorry for any inconvenience.  Oh, and feel free to come out and lend a hand.  We have some tasks that involve sitting around and cutting stuff with clippers (onions and garlic).

This week we will have watermelon, potatoes, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green beans, yellow beans, cucumbers, onions, tomatillos, eggplant (I really hope people are enjoying the eggplants.  They seem to be never ending!), some cauliflower, some cabbage, some beets, a few squash (might be the last week for summer squash) possibly kale and carrots if we have enough time.  It should be another heavy week.

We will have ShroomShare, FruitShare, CheeseShare, MeatShare (on Friday), and EggShare.

The flowers for FlowerShare are slowing down considerably.  I think the heat and dryness from the last few weeks have taken their toll.  We will assess them on Wednesday to determine if we can still supply flowers.  We have given out nine weeks of flowers; our goal is ten weeks.  Hopefully we can get at least one more week out of them.

Speaking of shares, we have a few WinterShares left.  A WinterShare contains items that are easily stored in the winter; no need to process them.  Included in a WinterShare are potatoes, onions, shallots, garlic and winter squash.  The price is $95 for a full share and $50 for a half share.  See WinterShare for more details.  If you’d like to order a WinterShare please send me email with the size and then follow-up with payment.

That’s all for now.  See you at the Film Fest!
