2012 List of Banished Words

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has recovered by now from their failed New Year’s resolutions.

Much like Lake Superior State University does each year with its list of words that need to be banished, we here at Fresh Earth Farms go through a similar exercise to exorcize words that are overused on the farm and in need of retirement. I thought I would share some of these with you now that we’ve decided we will no longer be using them.  I’ve included definitions for the words some of you may not recognize.

Corn digger: someone who is unfamiliar with how to harvest a particular vegetable.  “I don’t want to harvest peppers with Carl.  We’ll never get done.  He is such a corn digger!”

Galser: a small hole in the drip tape that allows irrigation water to shoot into the air.  Similar to a geyser but smaller. “Hey Clem, looks like our hoes have created a few more galsers.  The boss isn’t going to be too happy with us.”

Pubble: from the words potato and rubble.  They are the tiny potatoes we pick up while digging the usable sized potatoes.  “Quit wasting so much time getting the pubble.  We need to get the good sized potatoes!”

Corn floss: the corn silk that gets stuck in your teeth when sampling the sweet corn.  “I can’t seem to get this corn floss out of my teeth!”

Anatomical: used to describe a vegetable that looks like something else. “That pepper is so anatomical!” (Click at your own risk).

Weed and Pests: we have been trying to banish these two since the day we started farming!

We were thinking of agreeing with Lake Superior State University on their call for the banishment of the word “amazing” but then we wouldn’t know what to call the members of our farm!

Ok, enough sweet talking the customers, let’s get to the important announcements:

Pricing for VeggieShare, Summer FruitShare, CheeseShare and MeatShare are finalized and available to order.  You can find an order form on our web site.  If you are already a member and your contact information has not changed you can send in a check with the purchased product written on the Memo line.

Referral Credit
For every new member you refer to us who purchases a VeggieShare you will receive a $25 credit toward the purchase of any Fresh Earth Farms product.  If we can get every one of our members to refer one new customer we would be done with our recruiting for the year!  That would allow us time to research, order and install a new cold frame.  With a new cold frame we could get tomatoes several weeks earlier.  How great would that be!  So get your address books out, send out spam emails and don’t forget to share our facebook page with your facebook friends.  Remember to tell them to put your name in the “Where did you here about us?” section of the order form.

January-June FruitShare
Though we had our first box yesterday we are still taking orders for the January through June FruitShare.  This is a nice way to get wonderfully delicious fruit during the cold winter months.  We will prorate the price for the remaining deliveries.  Contact me if you would like to join and I will let you know the price.  Pickup location are near downtown St. Paul and here at the farm.  The clementines and grapefruits have been especially sweet this season!

Eggs and Garlic
We have eggs and garlic available if anyone would like some.  Please contact me and we can schedule a time for you to pick it up!

As always, if you have questions, comments, suggestions or good jokes do not hesitate to send them my way!
