I must not be feeling very creative today so here are a few announcements followed by an update on farm stuff.
Plants Many years ago we started selling a few herb plants to our members. Seems like some of you like to get dirty by having a garden. As the years passed a few people asked if we could grow other plants for them, specifically tomatoes and peppers. It doesn’t take much for us to grow a few more so we said, “Sure!” This year I figured since we are doing this for a few people I might as well open it up to all members.
So, if you want us to grow some plants for you, you can order the plants from our online store or just send me an email with what you want. We have limited quantities so order soon (especially if you want more than six or so plants). The plants will be ready mid May for pick-up at the farm (no delivery). Let me know if you have any questions. The price is $1/plant. If ordering online you have to buy a minimum of six plants.
We still have shares available so please spread the word! Sales have picked up recently which is nice to see. Hopefully we can sell out soon. if you haven’t rejoined yet please do so as soon as possible. We’d hate to have you miss out on this season!
Besides veggies and plants we also sell coffee, cheese, flowers, fruit and winter storage share. These are great additions to your vegetable shares and help other small farms/businesses be successful. If you eat or drink any of these items please consider supporting these small businesses.
Payment is due unless you are on a payment plan. Please send in your payment as soon as possible. If you don’t know what you owe contact me and I can let you know.
In case you didn’t know I thought I would mention that we are fully socialized with social media. We have a facebook page, a facebook group (used manly for exchanging ideas/recipes on how to use each week’s produce), Pinterest page (mainly a recipe repository), twitter feed (mainly a link from our facebook page), and a YouTube channel (haven’t posted videos there in a while but if you haven’t checked them out it is an entertaining way to waste your valuable time). Feel free to subscribe or not. If you’d like to contribute to the Pinterest page let me know and I can somehow invite you to participate.
Farm News
We are still in the farm preseason. No outdoor activities have started yet however this may change quite soon. It has been wonderful that we haven’t had any precipitation in a while. It has given the ground time to warm up and dry out. It has been a bit cold at night, in fact below freezing most nights, so the ground isn’t as warm as we’d like. But it does seem like the frost is out of the ground so it won’t be much longer. Keep your fingers crossed.
The activity in the greenhouse has picked up considerably. We have planted onions, shallots, green onions, leeks, Brussels sprouts, two successions of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kohlrabi, tomatoes, peppers, hot peppers, eggplants, beets, fennel, flat parsley, curly parsley, marjoram, oregano, thyme, lettuce, Swiss chard, rosemary, kale, celery, celeriac, and a couple varieties of flowers. I think that about covers it for now. Of course we have much more to go, especially warm crops like cucumbers, squash, watermelons and sweet corn. But those grow pretty fast so we don’t plant them until closer to the time we feel it will become frost free for the rest of the summer.
Other than greenhouse planting it is office work and starting next week getting the equipment ready for the season. I’ll be taking the chains off the tractor tires so there cannot be any more significant snowfall (unlike last year).
One last item, sometime this Spring we will be planting potatoes. It is a fun activity for farm members to help out — including little kids. I don’t have the date picked yet — it is really dependent on the weather — but I thought I’d mention it to get the excitement building. It will most likely be one of the last Saturdays of April or the first Saturday of May.
That’s it for now. As always, do not hesitate to send in questions, comments, suggestions, re
